Abbey Road Studios Under Threat of Closure- See them while you can!

Dear Traveller,

Beatles fans wail no more! The Government has ridden to the rescue, by awarding this historic recording home of the Beatles, Grade II listed status, because of ‘It’s huge cultural importance’, following reports over the last week that current owners EMI were looking to sell this piece of British popular heritage.

Good news indeed for fan and tour guide alike, as it will come as no surprise to regular readers of this blog,  that Abbey Road and the Beatles play central roles in Mikro Tours’ London Rock and Roll tours.

This led to fears that this elegant Georgian Villa,  a recording studios for 80 years, could become a base for flats of the apartment kind, rather than those emanating from the orchestras that have long used the premises.

Now EMI, whilst admitting that the studios have long been losing money are talking of revitalising them, and are looking for the capital to achieve this.

In recent days theatrical composer/impressario Andrew Lloyd-Webber and the National Trust has spoken of the possibility of being associated with the project.

Abbey Road has been etched into the world’s popular culture for more than 40 years, thanks to The Beatles’ album named for the road in which the studios where they recorded 90 % of their music was created.

This fame was further magnified by that album’s iconic front cover of the ‘Fab Four’ walking over the street crossing by the studios. A pose regularly immitated by fans and tourists from all over the world who flock in their thousands every year to claim their part in the Beatles’ picture.

Fortunately for all those fans the good news is,  that whatever happens to the Abbey Road Studios building, the zebra road crossing will remain, and Mikro Tours will still visit it.

This may not be good news to the local motorists and tradesmen forced to wait as fans from afar afield as Australia and Japan walk in the footsteps of their heroes.

Sometimes their need for accuracy leads the dedicated Beatles follower to walk obsessively back and forward across the famous stripes, though their need for authenticity is seldom approved by motorists forced to wait!

Often in the height of summer this leads to a barrage of horns and shouts, which lack the harmony or wit of any thing composed by John and Paul in the neighbouring studios.

If the Beatles is your thing, or you are a devotee of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Queen, or any of the many musical giants associated with London, Mikro Tours would be delighted to show you around.

Fashion Week in London

Dear Traveller,

Mikro Tours notes that, this week London has been the destination for the great and good of the Fashion World, as the city plays host to London Fashion Week.

The week acts as a showcase for the best of Britain’s designing talent- Stella McCartney, Paul Smith, the recently-departed Alexander McQueen etc, but it also showcases the fact that London is a major shopping destination for designerclothes and other high-end goods.

We at Mikro Tours naturally provide sight-seeing trips of  London’s premier historic and cultural sites- Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London and historic Square Mile, but we also act as guide and companion to those wanting to hit the shops.

We’ll take you to the well-known hotspots such as- Harrods, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols,  and the designer -label destination of Bond Street, but equally we’ll use our knowledge to guide you to those specialist stores that often find favour with Her Majesty The Queen and other Royal Family members.

For instance, Mikro Tours will take you to Thomas Goode and Company, the Mayfair shop where the Queen buys her bone china, to John Lobb and Co providers of boots and shoes to Princes Phillip and Charles. We’ll even take the sharp-shooters amongst you to the James Purdey of Sons, gunmakers to the Queen.

These and many other similar shops are not just places to buy things in, but also emporiums boasting centuries’ of both British and Royal history.

Give yourselves a treat.

Tea With The Queen

Dear Traveller,

Mikro Tours likes to think that we offer a bespoke personalised service to all our clients, but even we were stumped when a few years back a client demanded tea with Her Majesty.

The tour started quite normally when I came to pick up the clients from their central London hotel- A middle-aged wife, her husband and a pair of teenage kids from the city of Waterloo, Iowa, USA.

Though in retrospect I should have spotted trouble ahead- The wife and daughter were decked out in dresses, hats and were wearing white gloves, whilst her husband and son wore morning suits and top hats!

Normally my clients in August prefer to wear T-shirts and jeans, but I assumed that they were going off to a classy party after the tour. Unfortunately so did they!

That morning we gave them the Mikro Tours London treatment and we saw the popular sites which bring the tourists to the town- The Tower of London, St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and Big Ben.

Everything went smoothly until we headed towards Buckingham Palace. The wife announced that she’d bought tickets for the family to tour the Palace, something that is very popular to do in August and September.

When we arrived at the Palace the lady seemed a little disappointed that so many others were also queuing to get in.
“My!” , she said: ” I thought Her Majesty would be entertaining fewer people, but I guess with all those big rooms, she has the capacity to entertain many at one sitting.”

My fears were confirmed when once in she asked an attendant what time tea would be served for the Queen.

He replied: “I don’t know Madam she’s at Balmoral on her holidays and it depends when her corgis get hungary.”

It was then the full horror sunk in, this family from Iowa thought that a ticket to view Buckingham Palace also brought with it a chance to meet it’s most illustrious resident!

The rest of the journey was very quiet.

For the record, Buckingham Palace is open to public visits in August and September, but admission does not mean the Queen will greet you herself. For this is the time of year when the Royal Family decamp to Scotland for their holidays.

Until next time,

The Dark Side- Sinister Tours of London

Dear Traveller,

On the Darkside-   Mikro Tours’ tour around the sinister tales and areas of London, remain among the most popular tours that our company does.

Int never ceases to amaze me how people are prepared to pay good money to be scared, not that our tours are ever that terrifying or spine-tingling. We aim to entertain not provoke nightmares.

Fortunately London abounds with enough tales of dark goings on- witches, ghosts, executions, murder, plague, pirates etc, to guarantee a good night out.

Naturally most visitors coming on this tour are keen to follow in the footsteps of Victorian London’s  most notorious killer, the one known as  Jack the Ripper.

For a few short months in 1888 women in London’s Whitechapel, then a poor slum area in London’s East End, remained fearful that they would become victims of the crazed killer.

At least six women did die before the killing-spree ended, but due to the fact that no one was ever caught the story remains  potent today, and continues to bring many visitors to those same London streets.

Who was Jack the Ripper? Well, as the years have gone-by the lack of a conviction has prompted much speculation- was he possibly a royal prince, a butcher, or famed society artist?

All these have been suggested, but as no one is ever likely to know the truth, Jack remains an ever-green staple of Mikro Tours and others’ tours of sinister London.

Until next time,

London Gateway to England’s Treasures

Dear Traveller,

As regular readers of our blog will know, Mikro Tours devises tour itineraries for visitors to London, but we do not only work in the capital city we also arrange trips to other places nearby.

And fortunately,  London is but only a matter of a few hours journey from many of the other attractions that regularly come up top of visitor wish lists.

Nearest to hand are the magnificent royal residences of Windsor Castle and Hampton Court Palace, both of which lie but an hour from Central London.

Windsor Castle remains very much a royal residence, and is rumoured to be the Queen’s favourite home, one that she stays at during most weekends of the year.

Attractions at the castle include:- St George’s Chapel, St George’s Hall, the Waterloo Chamber, Princess Mary’s dolls house, and a regular Changing of the Guard, like that which is found at Buckingham Palace.

Hampton Court Palace, meanwhile lies a similar distance from Central London, and has been a royal palace since the days of  Henry VIII, who would often relax there in between getting married and divorced from his wives.

In fact April 2009 marks the 500th anniversary of Henry ascending the English throne, and many special events are planned to commemorate the  ‘much-married monarch’.

London Christmas Shopping Wonderland

Dear Traveller,

With the dear old British Pound dropping like a stone against other currencies, there has seldom been a better time to come and get value for your Dollars, Euros,  and Yen etc, in London’s shops.

Here at Mikro Tours we provide sight-seeing tours of London for independently-minded visitors in both small and larger groups. And, alongside these tours we are forever being asked where are the best places to shop.

Many of you would have heard about the splendours to be found in London’s most famous department store- Harrods, in Knightsbridge.

But London boasts several other notable department stores, not least Harrods’  Knightsbridge neighbour, Harvey Nichols, a favourite of the late Princess Diana.

Whilst back on Oxford Street, you can spend hours of fun wandering through the Edwardian splendour of Selfridges, founded by American,  Gordon Selfridge just over a century ago.

And bordering Oxford Street is to be found the famous boutiques and shops of Bond Street- London’s equivalent of Rodeo Drive, where the designer names  jostle for attention, from Chanel to Armani, and jewellers like Tiffany sparkle.

So if you are looking to add to what Santa might bring you this Christmas, London offers you an affordable option.

Until next time,

Michael Gerrard, Mikro Tours

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to The Pub 2

Dear Traveller,

Among the most popular tours which our company, Mikro Tours, conducts around London, is ‘Olde Pubs and Ale Houses’, and as you can imagine any tour that involves drink can throw up some humorous incidents

Firstly, it should be stressed that the trip is not supposed to be a ‘bar hop’, but rather a tour around some of the capital’s most historic drinking establishments, where a drink can be enjoyed alongside the numerous tales with anecdotes.

And although for the most part our clients are content to soak up the history along with a few drinks, occasionally the soaking takes priority with comical consequences.

On one occasion, I had on board the bus  a lady visitor from Queens, New York, in the United States.

As a bar-worker back home she expressed great enthusiasm for going to see some of London’s most historic pubs, but unfortunately let slip that she had not had anything to eat before leaving for the tour.

Inevitably the lady got ever-more animated as the evening progressed, and as the drink-flowed. By our final pub, she’d found her voice and began leading the rest of my clients in singing some of Dean Martin’s greatest hits!

On arriving back at her hotel, she had to be accompanied across the road with me on one arm, and her daughter on the other. Otherwise she might have fallen off the wagon!

Until next time,
